Bella Italia: Caprese is a traditional starter, which is one of Italy’s national dishes. That is not only because it tastes so “buono”, but also because of its appearance. Did you know that the colour combination (red tomatoes, white mozzarella and green basil) is a tribute to the Italian flag?
Ingredients
6 medium-size fresh tomatoes
2 buffalo mozzarella
Olive oil
Sea salt flakes
Black pepper
3 basil stems
Preparation
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Start by washing the tomatoes and cutting them into thin slices. Now chop the mozzarella into thin slices. Thinly coat the tomatoes and mozzarella with olive oil, and add salt and pepper.
Each layer is a work of art. Pluck the basil leaves from their stems. Alternately stack the tomato, mozzarella and basil in the food rings. The caprese can be refrigerated.
Before serving, tip the contents of the food rings onto a plate, and add toasted ciabatta. That is the best way to enjoy the taste of caprese. Basta!
